Extreme Makeover: Weight Loss Edition” has become known for transforming dangerously obese people. Tonight, ABC’s transformational specialist and celebrity trainer Chris Powell focuses on Nyla, who is only 27 years old and weighs 435 pounds.
Struggling with her weight all her life, Nyla lives in Houston and loves southern food. When she learns she’s been chosen for a year-long opportunity to work with Chris and other specialists, she’s excited. What Nyla doesn’t realize: months of workouts, diet sacrifices, and emotional confrontations lie ahead. The show, which airs at 9 pm on ABC, gives Nyla the opportunity to recognize that beneath her bubbly exterior lie insecurity and fear. Can Chris help her exercise her body and exorcise her inner demons? “There is a tie to some kind of emotional trauma, in the past, of people I’ve worked with, and that trauma is typically unaddressed,” he told ABC News in an interview recently.
Chris has helped 11 obese individuals lose more than 2,190 pounds. But those are just statistics: what the numbers don’t reveal are how Chris supports them in coping with their psychological problems, ranging from infertility to alcoholism to sexual abuse. He moves in with them, becoming part of their lives in order to supervise their exercise, their diets, and their personal lives. And if that sounds like Chris, who authored the best-selling “Choose to Loose: the 7-Day Carb Cycle Solution,” considers himself the ultimate guru, the reality is that he’s humble about his success. . “I think we all have a desire to feel significant in the world,” he said. “It’s not about me doing nice things for other people. I get something out of this, and its fulfillment. This is the best addiction in the world.”
